Watching what is going on in the USA from across the pond is frustrating and crippling in equal measure. Sure, their is a legitimate requirement to enforce the law vis à vis non-US citizens living in America without the proper permissions and visas, however, ripping fathers away from their families as they walk down the street or forcing a vehicle to come to a stop by crashing into it - just to drag the driver out and whisk them away without rhyme or reason, or going door to door demanding people prove their nationality is just too far. It has to stop in its current mode. Some of the footage of families screaming as a family member is dragged away from them by masked men in military tactical gear is heart wrenching, but zip-tying children is just plain wrong. And then there are the two incidents that never should had occurred. After Alex Pretti’s life was taken, I couldn’t get the situation of lawlessness by the Federal Government out of my mind and I was literally losing sleep because America is experiencing something that we in the UK are looking at if Reform UK get into power; a ‘mini MAGA’, given Nigel Farage’s friendship with Trump. So as I lay there in bed, trying to calm the thoughts in my already PTSD-ridden mind, I realised that I needed to take those burdensome thoughts and transfer them somewhere else (so that I could sleep more than anything else!) Poetry; I’ve wrote a lot of poetry as a child and adolescent - and some as an adult and this seemed like a good outlet. But as I turned to the internet for inspiring words, I came across the Dropkick Murphy’s new song, and as meaningful and powerful as it is, I wanted to approach this with a little more decorum(!) - to show the more conscious and human side of what was happening on the streets of Minneapolis. That being said, I couldn’t get the idea out of my head whereby the poem needed to contain a line or phrase that everyone could easily remember, one which had meaning and was infectious enough to be uttered time and time again… …Like in a song. I’ve never written a song before, and my understanding of the process is minimal at best. And I didn’t know where to start (in the context of song writing), so I simply typed out words, feelings, phrases, things that I’d seen in all those mobile phone videos and broadcast TV news reporting, and quite quickly, I could see versus coming together. After about three hours (and a little bit of Googling to learn about song writing development!) the words were complete. But there lay the next problem - how the heck do I put actual music together? I turned to Fiverr to see if I could get a musician to knock something together, but there’s obviously a cost to (me) people’s hard work - that and time. A bit more Googling pushed me in the direction of AI-generated music, which I saw as a disappointing cop-out. Again, the cost to go beyond the ‘free trial’ of music services offered on many websites was preventative. But then, one of the myriad of iPhone apps I downloaded proved the best in terms of cost (free) and the actual quality of the audio. ‘Suno’ is the name of the app and I actually churned out a few different genres based on my lyrics. …I hope you like it. For Renee Good and Alex Pretti: taken from this world in cruel and unnecessary circumstances. My lyrics.
