Wide of the ceremony with audience standing for the National Anthem of Bangladesh STORYLINE More than four decades after becoming an independent nation, Bangladesh on Tuesday honoured more than 100 'Friends of Bangladesh' for their contributions to the country's War of Liberation from Pakistan in 1971. Bangladeshi President Zillur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina distributed the awards at a ceremonial reception at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in Dhaka. Scores of Indians figured in the list of awardees, conferred in two categories - 'Friends of Liberation War Honour' and 'Bangladesh Liberation War Honour'. The other recipients were from countries including Australia, Denmark, Germany, Japan, Nepal, Sweden, Switzerland, the UK, the US and former Yugoslavia. Among the recipients were the Indian armed forces, represented at the ceremony by Indian Minister of State for Defence Pallam Raju. "It is a formal recognition by the Government of Bangladesh of the supreme sacrifice made by about 1,400 Indian Armed Forces personnel during Bangladesh's nine-month long Liberation War,"the Indian Defence ministry said in a statement. The chief minister of the North-East Indian state of Tripura Manik Sarkar was also given the award. Some institutions and organisations including the Red Cross, the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), BBC, All India Radio and Oxfam also received the awards for their contributions during the Liberation War. Each of the awardees received a gold-plated silver metallic plaque on which a replica of the national memorial had been engraved and a citation. Last year, Bangladesh had conferred the "Bangladesh Freedom Honour" on former Indian prime minister Indira Gandhi .
