In 2010 I was lucky to visit Myanmar on a research trip. In Yangon, I found the traditional marionette ensemble "Htwe Oo Myanmar" who are one of the last existing traditional marionette ensembles in Myanmar and try to preserve this tradition but face an uncertain future. The members of the ensemble did not only share their knowledge and performances, they were also very helpful to give me a deeper insight into the making process of these beautiful puppets, and introduced me to puppet creators and famous researchers. In 2011 I invited the ensemble on a tour throughout Europe: http://www.musikausasien.de/htmls/kon... (sorry, only German text) This helped the ensemble to create a home theatre in Yangon, but actually not only the global pandemic but also the unstable political situation in Myanmar make it questionable for the ensemble if there will be performances in the future. With a lack of tourists and the artists and performers working in other jobs to earn a living, this tradition, which is hundreds of years old, might soon be gone. Please visit the website of the ensemble: http://www.htweoomyanmar.com/ This private documentation was recorded and edited in 2010, so the quality might not compete with modern standards...
