The cornea is the eye’s clear outermost surface at the front of the eye, and plays a critical role in you ability to focus your vision. The cornea does not obtain its nourishment from blood cell like other bodilt tissues, but instead receives them from tears and the aqueous humor. What are the parts of the cornea? Although the cornea is a clear structure, it is a highly organized tissue. Containing five important layers. These layers are: The Epithelium The epithelium is the cornea’s outermost layer. Its primary functions are to: block the passage into the eye of foreign material, such as dust, water, and bacteria; and provide a smooth surface to absorb oxygen and nutrients from tears. The next layer behind the epithelium is the Bowman’s layer, composed of protein fibers called collagen, which can form scars as it heals impacting a person's vision. Behind Bowman’s layer is the stroma, which is the thickest layer of the cornea, and primarily consists of water and collagen. The Collagen gives the cornea its strength, elasticity, and form. T Behind the stroma is Descemet’s membrane, which serves as a protective barrier against infection and injuries. The innermost layer of the cornea is the endothelium. The endothelium’s primary task is to pump any excess fluid out of the stroma. preventing any swelling, resulting in a thick and opaque cornea. Although the cornea presents itself as simply transparent tissue, it plays many critical functions that can impact our vision.
