What happens when an autonomous bus no longer has a driver on board? How does it communicate its intentions to pedestrians, cyclists, and other road users? The InterAct project explores exactly this challenge by developing and testing external Human-Machine Interfaces (eHMI) for autonomous buses. Through real-world pilots in Rotterdam (Netherlands) and Stavanger (Norway), project partners are rethinking how autonomous public transport can safely and clearly interact with other road users. The InterAct solution uses external screens and audio signals on autonomous buses to communicate real-time intentions such as “I am waiting for you”, “I am stopping”, or “Do not overtake”. These messages help replace traditional driver cues like eye contact and hand gestures, increasing trust, safety, and accessibility. With Europe facing a growing shortage of professional drivers, autonomous buses are becoming a crucial part of sustainable and inclusive public transport. InterAct demonstrates how technology, regulation, and citizen engagement can work together to move closer to safe, fully driverless operations—without losing the human element.
