Battle of Uhud – A Turning Point in Islamic History The Battle of Uhud is one of the most important events in Islamic history, taking place in the 3rd year after Hijrah (625 CE) near Mount Uhud in Madinah al-Munawwarah. Abu Sufyan, along with other Makkan leaders, gathered an army of around 3,000 soldiers, fully armed with cavalry, infantry, and weapons, determined to destroy the Muslim community in Madinah. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ consulted his companions (Sahabah), and it was decided to meet the enemy outside Madinah, near Mount Uhud. Muslim Army and Strategy The Muslim army consisted of around 1,000 soldiers, but hypocrite leader Abdullah ibn Ubayy withdrew with 300 men, leaving only 700 to face the enemy. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ strategically placed 50 archers on a hill, instructing them not to leave their position under any circumstances. The Battle Begins Initially, the Muslims fought bravely, and victory seemed certain. The Quraish army began to retreat. However, seeing the enemy flee, many Muslim archers disobeyed the Prophet’s command, leaving their post to collect war spoils. This opened a gap in the Muslim defense. The Turning Point Khalid ibn al-Walid (not yet a Muslim) seized the opportunity, leading the Makkan cavalry to attack from behind. Chaos spread among the Muslims. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was injured—his helmet pierced his cheek, and he fell into a pit. The rumor of his death further weakened morale. Aftermath of the Battle About 70 Muslims were martyred, including Hamza ibn Abdul Muttalib (RA), the beloved uncle of the Prophet ﷺ. The Quraish, thinking they had avenged Badr, withdrew without attacking Madinah. Although the Muslims did not achieve victory, the Battle of Uhud taught vital lessons about obedience, discipline, and patience in the path of Allah.
