I'll be honest, this trip was a big deal for us. It's been years since either of us had a personal best in getting to a new altitude, with my highest point reached being Mont Blanc and Viv's being Pichincha. We were thrilled. Four months ago I had no idea that Mexico had such high mountains/volcanoes, and once I found out about some of these they quickly became at the top of my bucket list, specifically Iztaccihuatl and Pico de Orizaba. Being alone and without a guide in a summit attempt for the third highest mountain in Mexico was a dream. The climb is amazing. The ridge to Iztaccihuatl's summit feels endless, but the views of the surrounding valleys and Popocatepetl make the effort worth it.
