Healthy herds are the foundation of a resilient ranch. In this second installment of the four-part Rural Resilience webinar series, Dr. Katie Rein of Crazy Mountain Veterinary Service shares practical, hands-on guidance for livestock vaccination. This session covers the fundamentals of proper vaccination technique, including needle size selection, correct injection sites, and the differences between subcutaneous and intramuscular methods. Participants gain clear, applicable instruction designed to improve herd health, protect meat quality, and build confidence when working cattle. This webinar is ideal for ranch hands, interns, spouses, friends who assist with livestock care, experienced ranchers seeking a refresher, and anyone who was never formally taught vaccination techniques. What You Will Learn • How to choose the correct needle length and gauge • Where to administer injections for optimal animal health and carcass quality • The difference between subcutaneous and intramuscular injections • Practical tips for safe, effective, and low-stress vaccination • Common mistakes and how to avoid them About the Speaker Dr. Katie Rein grew up on her family’s ranch west of Melville, Montana, which has been in her family since 1893. She earned her undergraduate degree from Montana State University, completed veterinary school at Washington State University, and went on to complete an internship in Large Animal Medicine at Texas A and M University. After working at Harlowton Veterinary Clinic for two years, she founded Crazy Mountain Veterinary Service, where she serves livestock producers with a focus on practical, field-ready veterinary care. About the Rural Resilience Series Now in its sixth year, the Rural Resilience series from the Ranchers Stewardship Alliance highlights practical skills and applied knowledge that strengthen working lands and the communities who steward them.
