Capacitor: General Specifications of the Capacitor Explained

In this video, the general specifications or electrical characteristics of the capacitor are explained. Timestamps: 0:00 Introduction 1:10 Rated Capacitance Value 2:15 Capacitance Tolerance 2:58 Temperature Range 3:15 Temperature Co-efficient 4:26 Rated Voltage of Capacitor 5:04 Volumetric Efficiency 5:44 Leakage Current (Insulation Resistance) of Capacitor 7:05 Effective Series Resistance (ESR) / Dissipation Factor 8:55 Effective Series Inductance (ESL) and Series Resonant Frequency Capacitor Specifications: In this video, some general specifications of the capacitor which one should know before selecting the capacitor for a specific application are explained. 1) Rated or Nominal Capacitance It is the nominal value of the capacitance for which it is designed. It is measured in Farad (F). The commercially available capacitor ranges from pF to tens of F. The actual value of capacitance may vary from nominal value as actual capacitance depends on the operating temperature, biasing voltage, operating frequency, and the aging of the capacitor. 2) Capacitance Tolerance It is the percentage of allowed deviation from the rated value of the capacitance. Depending on the type of capacitor, the tolerance can vary between 1% to 20%. 3) Operating temperature range It is the temperature range over which the capacitor can function properly. 4) Temperature Co-efficient: The capacitance value also depends on the operating temperature. It is the change in the capacitance with the temperature. It is specified in PPM / C or the percentage change in the capacitance over the operating temperature range 5) Rated Voltage of the Capacitor: It is the maximum DC voltage or peak pulse voltage that may be applied continuously to the capacitor at any temperature within the rated temperature range. 6) Volumetric Efficiency: It is the capacitance per unit volume. It is specified as CV (C*V product) / unit volume 7) Leakage Current : Since dielectric material is not a perfect insulator, there will be a leakage current in the capacitor. If any capacitor is charged to a certain voltage and left open then over the period of time there will be a slight reduction in the voltage. Leakage current for different capacitor varies from nA to uA. For some capacitors (Film and Ceramic Capacitors) it is mentioned in terms of Insulation resistance. 8) Effective Series Resistance (ESR) and Effective Series Inductance: The actual capacitor has a finite series resistance and series inductance. The capacitor with lower ESR is preferred for high current applications. Since with high current, there will be a power dissipation across the series resistance and that will generate the heat and increases the temperature of the capacitor. This video is helpful to all the students of science and engineering for understanding the general specifications of the capacitor which one should know before selecting the capacitor for a specific application. #ALLABOUTELECTRONICS #capacitor #CapacitorSpecifications -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Follow my second channel:    / @allaboutelectronics-quiz   Official Website: https://www.allaboutelectronics.org Follow me on Facebook:   / allaboutelecronics   Follow me on Instagram:   / all_about.electronics   -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Music Credit: http://www.bensound.com
