The Saviour of Plants is a short play devised by Oğuzhan Şahin and Moon Forde collaborating with Peter Hussey. The play was filmed by Sancar Çalişkan and Mohammad Farajalla in Newbridge, County Kildare in October 2022. It is part of the Here and There: Performing Ecologies project. Here and There: Performing Ecologies is an Erasmus+ funded project involving two European cultural bodies. Kinitiras in Athens, a performance and dance network, paired with Crooked House in Ireland, a theatre-making company, to use performance as a tool for provoking action on climate change. They created the Here and There project and submitted it to the Greek National Agency of Eramsus+ under the Small-Scale Partnership programme in 2021 - 2022. It was approved and the work began with 11 young people in each ensemble in 2022. Each group staged their work locally in their home regions, and then brought the work to the attention of policymakers or decision-makers at a national level. Crooked House’s ensemble made 5 short plays that were staged in parked cars. The performances focus on a set of characters, situations, timelines and moods – all inspired by climate change issues. Audiences were invited to sit in the back seats of the cars (three per car) and watch the show unfold before them. Each piece was less than ten minutes. Peter Hussey is the artist collaborating with the Crooked House ensemble. He is a theatre maker and actor trainer who established Crooked House in 1993, and who now works with young people in Ireland, London, Turkey and Europe to make theatre based on their experiences, ideas and abilities. Each company is concerned about climate action and about the relatively slow pace of progress on making any change. Most of the young performers involved see their role as putting pressure on those people in power who can make a difference. They also see their role as taking action themselves. In particular, they are concerned that what we do ‘here’ in this part of the world has huge impact on what happens ‘there’ in the global majority world. All actions have consequences: and positive action here can hopefully improve conditions elsewhere.
