Valletta, Malta: The World's Most Perfect Walled City Valletta is unique. It is a UNESCO-protected Renaissance masterpiece, often described as the world’s most fortified city. Built by the Knights of St John, this walled capital is packed with bastions, ramparts, and some of the most dramatic harbour defences in Europe. In this episode of The Floating Nomads, we explore how war created this architectural wonder, seeing it on foot and from the water=from the fortress walls and Fort St Elmo to St John’s Co-Cathedral, famous for its extraordinary Baroque interior and Caravaggio’s masterpiece, The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist. We also dig into Valletta’s WWII story at the National War Museum, see the George Cross awarded to Malta for bravery, and take in the Grand Harbour, one of the great natural harbours of the Mediterranean. Along the way, we share a few of our favourite Valletta moments, including the Upper Barrakka salute, the legendary "Faith" Gloster Gladiator, and a toast to the late actor Oliver Reed at his final watering hole, 'The Pub'. If you’re planning a Malta trip, or stopping in Valletta on a cruise, this is a practical, walkable guide to the best things to see in Valletta and why this tiny city feels like one big fortress. Featured in this episode: Valletta fortifications, walls, bastions, ramparts Fort St Elmo and the National War Museum, George Cross St John’s Co-Cathedral (Baroque masterpiece) Caravaggio in Malta (The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist) Grand Harbour and Valletta harbour views Upper Barrakka salute Pastizzi and Kinnie We’re Adam and Rick, The Floating Nomads.
