There are two main types of IBD: Crohn's disease and Ulcerative Colitis. The diagnosis of IBD requires a comprehensive evaluation, and endoscopy plays a crucial role in the diagnostic process. Endoscopy allows a doctor to visually examine the inside of the gut and take biopsy samples of the tissue for further analysis. Endoscopy is a procedure in which a thin, flexible tube with a camera on the end is inserted into the gut to visually examine the inside. There are two main types of endoscopy used in the diagnosis of IBD: upper gastrointestinal endoscopy (UGIE) and colonoscopy. UGIE involves the insertion of an endoscope through the mouth to examine the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum. During the procedure, the doctor may take biopsy samples of the gut lining to check for signs of inflammation or other abnormalities. Colonoscopy involves the insertion of an endoscope through the rectum to examine the entire colon. During the procedure, the doctor may take biopsy samples of the gut lining to check for signs of inflammation or other abnormalities. Colonoscopy is the gold standard for diagnosing IBD because it allows the doctor to visualize the entire colon. The biopsy samples taken during endoscopy are sent to a laboratory for further analysis. The pathologist will examine the samples under a microscope to check for signs of inflammation, ulcerations, and other abnormalities in the gut lining. The pathological examination of biopsy samples is an essential step in the diagnostic process because it helps differentiate between Crohn's disease and Ulcerative Colitis and assess the severity of the disease. The final diagnosis of IBD is based on the results of the patient's evaluation, laboratory tests, imaging studies, and endoscopy. The doctor may also consider the patient's symptoms, medical history, and biopsy results to make the final diagnosis.
