(21 Jan 2014) Police in Pakistan say gunmen attacked two teams of polio workers on Tuesday in the southern city of Karachi, killing three people, and wounding another. Two females and a male worker administering the vaccine were killed, according to a police official. "We were having breakfast at our home, suddenly we heard the gun shots," said one local resident, Sajid Hussain Shah. "We came out and found our gate with bullet holes.... I saw the dead bodies of the polio workers laying on the ground with papers and blood all around them," he added. Their bodies were taken a morgue at the local Jinnah Hospital in Karachi. Health officials say the vaccination campaign was cancelled following the attack. No group has claimed responsibility but Pakistani militants have killed several polio workers and police protecting them in Karachi and elsewhere in recent months. Pakistan is one of only three countries where the polio virus is still endemic. Militants oppose vaccination against polio and consider such campaigns a cover for spying. They also claim the vaccine is intended to make Muslim boys sterile.
