The Shore Road Pumping Station was constructed in the 1880s to prevent flooding in the railway tunnel under the River Mersey. Two steam-powered beam pumps operated continuously to remove millions of gallons of water that could inundate the tunnel and disrupt train travel. One of these original 19th century pumps, nicknamed 'The Grasshopper,' remains in the building today, though it is no longer operational. The pumping station still serves its original purpose using three modern pumps to keep the Merseyrail tunnel clear. This stunning Victorian building features Italianate brick and slate details. It was awarded listed status in 1992 to protect its historic architecture. The site briefly operated as a museum before closing in 2008 due to insufficient funding. Last weekend, the Shore Road station opened to the public again, providing access to this local Victorian landmark.
