Hotjar Heatmaps and Recordings - What Are They and How Do They Work? HotJar is simply the coolest website management/development tool that I have come across in the twenty-five years of building and maintaining websites. However, I was left wondering what users were doing on the website for most of that time. Were they confused? Were they reading? Why weren't they buying? Why did they abandon a shopping cart, and at what point? HotJar has removed all that guesswork. You simply install the Hotjar code on your site, like adding Google Analytics. HotJar has a wizard to help you out. Once installed, it will start gathering data. Heatmaps are a graphical representation of where people spend time on the page, where they are clicking, and how often. Recordings are individual sessions on the website. Recordings allow you to watch an individual use your website. In the case of "TheEmpireBuildersPodcast.com" site that is in the video, we found that people read the podcast transcript on their cell phones. Something we never expected they would do. It broke the myth that people don't read content on their cell phones. It proved that audio content is sometimes hard for people to consume, depending on where they are. We have created graphics on the transcript pages that are designed to get people to click and engage further with us due to this discovery. The heatmaps proved this, as shown in the video. We have used it on e-commerce sites to improve conversion and focus on unique products. The adjustments we made resulted in a huge increase in sales. The other place we used HotJar, was to improve the customer experience was with a visualizer, a web app that would let you see how the product looked when put on a house. We had a belief that users would use the sample home pictures before uploading a picture of their own home, and we were able to prove this out. It is really nice to have an idea of how people are using the websites we manage and where they are struggling so that we can improve their experience thanks to HotJar.
