The Pagani Zonda C12, a sports car developed by Italian automaker Pagani Automobili (helmed by Horacio Pagani), was unveiled in 1999. Appearing later was the C12S, a more powerful version of the C12 sporting a 7.3-liter AMG-tuned engine. The racing version of the Zonda was developed on this car. While the carbon composite monocoque shell and tubular frames of the normal C12S were retained, body width was narrowed from 80.9 inches to 78.7 inches to comply with GT racing regulations, and curb weight was reduced from 1,250 kg to 1,150 kg. Although the engine was the same 6.0-liter from the C12, it generated over 591 HP. The gearbox was changed to a 6-speed sequential unit, brakes were swapped out for Brembo 6-pot calipers on carbon ceramic discs, aerodynamic aids were added to the body on both the front and back, and a diffuser was even bolted to the rear end. The car debuted at the 12 Hours of Sebring in 2003. The result was a DNF (Did Not Finish) because of engine trouble. It then entered the 24 Hours of Le Mans, but was again unable to finish because of problems with the gearbox. Nevertheless, it drew considerable attention and popularity for its impressive specs and looks reminiscent of the Group C cars of the previous decade. The C12 remained in production through 2006.
