DISCLAIMER: I am not a medical professional and I am not providing medical advice. This is simply a journalistic expression of my personal story. Though I may provide feedback to people's comments, these are only opinions based on my unique experience. I take no personal responsibility for my audience’s decisions and actions related to psychiatric drugs or healthcare in general. The Reducing the Dosage series is a collection of videos following Kelly Janae's journey as she weans herself off of Lamotrigine, which is a mood stabilizer often prescribed for bipolar disorder. In Episode 4, Kelly J. discusses the main symptoms of her withdrawal such as depression, anxiety and fatigue. She realizes perhaps for the first time that she IS in withdrawal, and has found an online forum called Surviving Antidepressants which gives her solace and imbues her with self-compassion for her abnormal energy levels and emotions. She touches on "prescription cascades" and implores people struggling with mental illness to be careful about letting psychatric professionals prescribe unnecessary drugs. She emphasizes the importance of therapy as a supplement, and talks about fish oil as a promising supplement to curb mood imbalances. "The Reducing the Dosage series is my offering to the world to share a hopeful success story of how we can actually take control over our mental and emotional lives without relying on prescription medication, should that be something a person is interested in doing. I am doing this in support of the world I know we can all live in: A world where expressing our emotions is healthy and supported. A world where medicine is first and foremost a walk in nature, quality nutrition, exercise, and deep relationships with others. A world where everyone can afford health care, and therapy services in particular. The paradigm of how we think about mental "illness" needs to change, and I know that my "bipolar disorder" is simply an imbalance imposed upon me by the unnatural pressures of modern society to hide our emotions until they boil over and consume us. The medication helped when I reached the end of my rope, but there is no reason why any of us should have to end up there in the first place. There are natural ways to heal that incorporate art, nature, community, dance, song, and ritual - no RX necessary. I am determined to continually find ways to help myself and others navigate this messy world we have inherited, so that we may discover the highest expression of ourselves and share our gifts to help create a peaceful, just, sustainable reality."
