Wim Henderickx (1962–2022): Atlantic Wall — Voix de l’ombre (2012) for mezzo-soprano, ensemble and electronics Performed on November 1, 2024 at Urania Theatre in Cologne, Germany. About the Work „Atlantic Wall“ by Belgian composer Wim Henderickx (1962–2022) is a powerful and meditative reflection on fragility, memory, and the shadows of war — inspired by Paul Verlaine’s poem “Chanson d’automne.” Henderickx aimed to sublimate the deeply human pain into an almost spiritual experience. War is linked to compassion. The alternation between emptiness and fullness forms the basic idea of this work. He chose „Voix de l’ombre“ as the subtitle, because the idea of the tone and its shadow was an important starting point in the creative process. The wonderful electronics were realised in collaboration with his long-time friend, Jorrit Tamminga. Through the fusion of voice, ensemble, and electronic soundscapes, the work evokes the contrast between destruction and beauty, despair and transcendence. The human voice becomes an echo from the past, resonating through the shimmering textures of the ensemble and the subtle layers of electronics. As part of the project “Crossing the Abyss,” the piece connects Western contemporary music with the microtonal colors of Turkish folk music. Together with guest artist Derya Yıldırım, the ÉRMA Ensemble explores a shared musical language that bridges cultures and emotional worlds.
