Speaker: Professor Sarita Albagi, Instituto Brasileiro de Informação em Ciência e Tecnologia & Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (IBICT-UFRJ) Chair: Dr Germana Barata Researcher at State University of Campinas (UNICAMP) Title: Citizen science in new rights agendas Citizen science has expanded over the last three decades. It is a polysemic term that allows for different perspectives and definitions, including a pragmatic and a democratic view. Its agendas have broadened, ranging from promoting social contributions to science to supporting environmental, cognitive, and data justice, in some cases addressing controversial and conflicting issues. On the one hand, citizen science brings new possibilities for the democratization of knowledge; on the other, it can involve asymmetrical relationships between participants and be a source of data and knowledge neo-extractivism. We must therefore ask: “Citizen science: for what, for whom, and, above all, under what conditions?”. This presentation will propose topics for debate on concepts, roles and protocols of citizen science, with special attention to lessons learned from the conceptualizations and experiences of participatory and citizen science in the Global South, particularly in Latin America.
