Hildegard drover her sword into the dirt and sat her aching body against a weathered stone wall, her heavy breaths and beating heart echoing through her helmet. Every single part of her, from her arms to her legs to her heart, was sore. A rival armada of knights had launched a surprise offensive on them, which she and her allies had only barely managed to repel. No doubt there would be more in the coming days. Despite the knightly legions efforts to maintain a sense of unity amongst themselves, infighting and petty rivalries were inevitable. The Gilded Legion remained resolute, but these needless battles were becoming more and more frequent. The knights were losing their faith. Their resolve. What would come after that, one could only guess. She heard the gentle sound of chainmail and metal plating sheathing together, heavy footsteps thudding along the ground. Peering her head up, she saw a human shape walking past her. A knight clad in simple iron plate with a chainmail hauberk, carrying a longsword at his side. Hildegard studied him from where she sat. She'd seen him fight, and from what she witnessed on the battlefield, he was far better than his rather understated appearance would let on. The prowess he exhibited was greater than many other she'd seen in her company, fending off a great number of assailants by his lonesome. At one point, the two even fought side by side. To think someone of such talent could have been in her presence for so long, and she'd never noticed until now. She held her attention on him, though he scarcely paid her any mind as he walked past. She couldn't even place her name. "Fifteen captives." Came a female voice, one she was already somewhat familiar with. "It doesn't look as though many will make it, however." Hildegard turned to her side, and there she was, dressed in black and bearing a dark mask over her face; The Royal Scientist, as she called herself. The enigmatic figure who had only appeared within the knight's ranks somewhat recently, yet had amassed a significant level of influence amongst them in that short time. However, Hildegard could scarcely say what it was she did. "How did you..." Hildegard said through her tired breaths. "Oh, never mind...we will deal with them as necessary..." "I will deal with them." The Scientist replied flatly. Hildegard cocked her head to the side. "They must be tried and judged accordingly." "I have already judged them. Guilty." The Scientist responded, slowly turning her head to Hildegard. "No survivors. The gravely wounded will not receive treatment. It'd simply be a waste of effort." "Is this your idea of justice?" "This isn't about justice, Hildegard. This is about punishment. They have trespassed against us. Traitors and renegades, all of them." Hildegard weakly got to her feet. "I am stationed here as representative of the Gilded Legion. These men are under my charge. They follow my order." "My rank exceeds yours, Hilde." The Scientist stated. "I will do with these traitors as per my instructions." "Instructions from who?" "Lord Warden Acrius." Hildegard blinked. Acrius had assumed the mantle of Lord Warden some time ago. The highest military authority among the knights. His heavy-handed methods had kept them in line for some time now, though his control was slipping. The long wars with the neighboring factions and mounting infighting among his own men was beginning to take a significant toll. "And these instructions are?" "A private matter, not concerning you." "I have a right to know-" "No, Hilde. You do not." Hildegard stepped forward, her helmeted face mere inches from the Scientist. "Who are you?" She demanded. "What is your purpose here in our ranks. What is it you seek?" The Scientist was quiet for a moment, before simply shrugging her shoulders. "Progress." She spoke. "My purpose is to make progress in the war effort. To that end, I heed whatever order Acrius imparts upon me. I conduct research, study, and experiments that all serve to further the knights. Though you may not see me on the battlefield, Hilde, I assure you I am making strides. Order will prevail. The knights will prevail." Hildegard said nothing. The Scientist nodded her head and walked past her. "Has there been any word on Megaera's whereabouts?" Hildegard inquired. The Royal Scientist stopped, gazing off at nothing. For a moment, there was nothing but silence between the two. "No, there has not." -- Music Used: Dreams of Neo Tokyo (Dance with the Dead Remix) - Scandroid #forhonor #forhonorgameplay #forhonorwarden
