Brockenbahn Lineside: Final Ascent and the Goetheweg (May 2012)

This footage from 21st May 2012 captures the Brockenbahn on the final, punishing gradients before reaching the summit. The clips were filmed at several locations just below the peak, including the section where the line runs parallel to the famous Goetheweg hiking trail. At this altitude, the Harzer Schmalspurbahn’s (HSB) 2-10-2 tank engines are working at their absolute limit to bring the heavy passenger rakes to the highest station in the network. Filmed over a decade ago, these scenes show the Brocken climb as many will remember it—passing through the dense spruce forests that once lined the tracks. This was recorded before the significant deforestation and bark beetle damage of recent years transformed the scenery. It is a great opportunity to hear these powerful narrow gauge locomotives at full tilt on one of the most iconic stretches of railway in Europe.
