04/05 Leeds Cardiff CCTV and Leeds fans vs police after the game 15 01 2005 Trouble mars Leeds clash West Yorkshire Police officers sustained injuries following running battles which took place with Leeds fans following the Coca-Cola Championship clash against Cardiff at Elland Road. West Yorkshire Police also made 10 arrests for public disorder offences as Leeds fans attempted to exact a measure of revenge for the unsavoury events which unfolded three years ago during an FA Cup third-round tie at Ninian Park. In conjunction with their South Wales counterparts, and both clubs, a major operation was mounted by the West Yorkshire constabulary in order to prevent any trouble. Although there were no incidents before kick-off, violence flared after the 1-1 draw as hundreds of Leeds supporters waited outside the ground for Cardiff fans, who were detained inside for around 50 minutes following the final whistle. No Cardiff fan had been allowed to travel independently, with all match tickets handed out at a secret location 10 miles from Elland Road to only those supporters who had made their way on official coaches. But as the Leeds supporters attempted to attack the convoy of Cardiff coaches, they were repelled by the police, who in turn became the targets, resulting in the injuries and arrests. A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "At the conclusion of the match the Cardiff supporters were detained inside the ground with a view to their own safety, and they behaved extremely well. "Unfortunately after making their way to the waiting coaches, Leeds supporters attacked police officers, with two sustaining minor injuries. "One injured his back after being pulled from his horse which bolted, but fortunately was retrieved, while another injured his leg. "There were 10 arrests for public order offences." It is understood part of the M621 motorway, which runs past Elland Road, was closed for a short period of time due to the incidents.
