1933 saw the first trolleybus system in the USSR - a single line in Moscow. However, this form of electric transit became so successful, that the number of systems grew exponentially for the next decade. The first trolleybus model, the LK, or Lazar Kaganovich, was unsuitable, so a more modern vehicle was developed, which became the YaTB series. They are quite distinctive as they resemble an iron with their angled front. But, something even bigger and more modern was needed. And what was it to be? The MTB-82! The first few MTB-82s resembled the YaTB trollies, but that was about to change. The MTB-82D was designed as an homage to the American Old Look transit bus. Not built under license, though - it was basically an aesthetic copy. The MTB-82 went on to become the USSR's most successful trolleybus of the era, and about 5,000 were built, serving approximately 51 cities. See and hear the story of the MTB-82 trolleybus!
