Somewhat similar in form to Chopin's Ballade No. 2, Alkan's etude starts as a simple siciliano before developing, through increasing dissonances and chordal clusters, into the chaotic fire. During this fire, we hear through the music firemen marching to the scene to put down the fire, water being thrown on the fire, and at the end, a hymn of gratitude to God for the fire being put out. In many ways, this work foreshadows the adventurousness and emotional range of the Liszt symphonic poem. Although von Bülow was generally dismissive of the work ('we can find little that pleases us), Sorabji on the other hand called it "very remarkable, most original in form, and practically a fantasy" while van Dieren thought of it to be "an exquisite tone painting like one of the movements in Harold in Italy [by Berlioz]." Willem (Age 14) plays Alkan's Etude op 35 no 7.
