Book Chat: The German Crocodile - Ijoma Mangold in conversation with Sabine Jell-Bahlsen

The German Crocodile ( English Version) pre-order link - https://amzn.to/39Znmk7 Ijoma Alexander Mangold was born in Heidelberg in 1971. He studied literature and philosophy in Munich and Bologna. After working for the newspapers Berliner Zeitung and Süddeutsche Zeitung, he moved to Germany’s prestigious weekly, Die Zeit in 2009, where he was the chief literary critic from 2013- 2018. He continues there as the paper's cultural-political correspondent. Ijoma is one of four critics for the SWR television programme, Lesenswert and lives in Berlin. Ijoma Mangold is one of Germany’s leading literary critics and The German Crocodile is his compelling memoir of growing up different - in terms of his ethnicity and his erudite interests - in 1970s Heidelberg, in the USA as the German Wall fell, and as a young adult in the new Germany. His own story is inextricably linked with that of his mother, a German from the eastern province of Silesia, forced to escape as a refugee in the expulsions from 1944, and to start afresh in utter poverty in West Germany. His Nigerian father came to Germany to train in paediatric surgery but returned before Ijoma was old enough to remember him. His reappearance on the scene forces a crash collision with an unknown culture, one he grew up suspicious of, and a new complex family history to come to terms with. This fascinating memoir explores many questions experienced in his young years in a country where he was often referred to as a Mischling (“half-breed”) or Mulatte (“mulatto”)? Was he an opportunist, a master adaptor who had over-assimilated? How does it feel to grow up without his Nigerian father? What is the relationship between class and race? And what is more likely to garner someone suspicion in Germany: having dark skin or developing a passion for Thomas Mann and Richard Wagner? Mangold explores many existential questions in this lively multifaceted narrative. In an increasingly diverse society, this balancing act between one's own identity and that of a parent's culture - in this case the culture of another country, of another continent - is a narrative we see still too rarely represented in UK publishing and will be sure to add another perspective to the conversation around race, identity and social mobility. The English edition is being translated by Ruth Ahmedzai Kemp and has been made possible through translation grants from the Goethe Institute and the English Pen. It will be published in the UK by DAS Editions and is available for pre-order now: https://amzn.to/39Znmk7 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Sabine Jell-Bahlsen is a German-American anthropologist.
