Woman picking mushrooms and putting into crates STORYLINE: It's high season for tourists in Amsterdam, and more than a million people will visit the Dutch capital this summer to taste its varied artistic, historical and cultural offerings. But for many, the emphasis is on the word "high": thousands come specifically to smoke marijuana and take drugs without fear of getting in trouble with the police, due to the Netherlands' famed tolerance policy. And a relatively small number are interested in taking a 'trip' within a trip: under a little-known quirk of Dutch law, psychedelic mushrooms are legal here as long as they are sold fresh. Unbeknownst to most tourists, that loophole may soon be closed. The stores that sell mushrooms, known as "smartshops," have been operating under a cloud since March, when a 17-year-old French girl jumped to her death while on a school visit. Her parents blamed hallucinations brought on by mushrooms, though she had suffered from psychiatric problems in the past. Photographs of her beautiful, youthful face were splashed across newspapers around the country. A majority of parties in parliament demanded the mushrooms be outlawed. In May, Health Minister Ab Klink ordered the country's national health institute to perform a new study on the risks of using mushrooms. He will report back to parliament when it reconvenes next month.
