Pepper Adams, Baritone Sax solos - "Three and One" - Thad Jones (live performances, 1966 & 1982)

Audio clips and text: courtesy of Gary "Dr. Pepper" Carner, whose Pepper Adams discographical book is to be published on 1 September 2012 (with a later follow-up of an accompanying Pepper Adams biographical book to be published well before the centennial of Pepper Adams' birthday in 2030). http://www.pepperadams.com/ Here are two spellbinding versions of Thad Jones' great composition "Three and One". Thad arranged the tune for the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra as a Pepper Adams and Thad Jones feature, and it was recorded on May 6, 1966 on the big band's first recording. Throughout his career, Adams played "Three and One" in small groups, and the tune was an integral part of his repertoire. The first version, performed at Stampen in Stockholm, was recorded by Swedish Radio on June 5, 1970, during Adams' two-week gig at the club. Adams is accompanied by the house rhythm section of Claes Crona (piano), Red Mitchell (bass), and Jon Christensen (drums). Mitchell had moved to Stockholm in 1968 and, by 1970, was a fixture on the Stockholm scene. This was Adams' second European gig as a touring soloist, and a return engagement to Stampen. His first trip took place only a few months earlier, from mid-December 1969 to early February 1970, when he toured Scandanavia (Copenhagen, Aarhus, Uppsala, Goteborg, and Stockholm), with a detour in between to Lagos, Portugal, to visit his friend, painter David X. Young. Twelve years later, on October 14, 1982, Adams played Cafe La Voute in Montreal with a local rhythm section of Stan Patrick (piano), Freddie McHugh (bass), and Cisco Normand (drums). Vocalist Arlene Smith ran the club, formerly a bank building, and the bank vault was used as a bandstand. On this gig Stan Patrick was not fully recovered from open heart surgery, but, as you'll hear, nothing stops Pepper Adams from playing one of the most remarkable solos of his career! Bandleader Denny Christianson was in the audience, and he had this to say: "What struck me, when I saw him, was, what is a giant like this doing in a small, little place with fifty people listening to him? He should be center stage, down at a featured concert. That was always my frustration. This place was so small, you could only get about four people in the room where the band was playing, and everybody else had to be outside the vault. You could hear it, but you couldn't see it! It was a very bizarre place and it didn't last long. There's Pepper back in this hole, playing away, and there's some semblance of an audience scattered around pillars and posts. Bizarre!"
