At-home exercise and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) for MS mobility

Giuseppina Pilloni, PhD, NYU Grossman School of Medicine, New York, NY, discusses the applications of transcranial direct current situation (tDCS) in improving the mobility of patients with multiple sclerosis. Dr Pilloni describes the different investigations surrounding its efficacy, including the first clinical trial with 20 patients enrolled. Despite the assessed benefit of tDCS on gait and functional mobility, patients were disadvantaged due to problems with access and adherence to treatment. Therefore, another study was established to assess the benefit of remotely supervised tDCS (RS-tDCS) for patients to do at home, paired with daily exercise with elliptical machines. In total, 5 patients were enrolled to investigate the feasibility of at-home teleintervention. All sessions were completed successfully with no safety issues. Like the previous study, similar improvements in mobility were seen in this cohort; however, due to the small sample size, statistical analysis was not able to be conducted.
