However, we are here to tell you "Yes you can configure your R510 with 256GBs of memory." The Dell PowerEdge R510 is a 2U server operated by 2 x Intel Xeon 5500 or 5600 series CPUs (LGA1366 socket). The R510 is a Dell 11th Generation server and is the next gen to the Dell PowerEdge 2950 server (even though 2950 is 9th Gen... 10th Gen Dell was kind of weak so we skip it) . There are 8 DIMM slots utilizing DDR3 memory architecture. Sizes: 2GB 4GB 8GB 16GB or 32GB. Speeds: 1066MHz 1333MHz or 1600MHz. You can configure your R510 server with two types of RAM: ECC Registered (RDIMM) and ECC Unbuffered (Server UDIMMs). However, there is really only 1 choice in our opinion. ECC Reg is hands down the best option. ECC Reg will be cheaper than ECC Unbuffered and you can have a much higher capacity. Win--win for RDIMMs. Unfortunately Load Reduced memory (LRDIMM) is not accepted by the Dell R510. You would need to look to the next generation if you want to use LRDIMM with the Dell R520. The top of the line memory configuration is 256GB via (8 x 32GB) DDR3 PC3-12800R 1600MHz Server Memory. Unfortunately, 64GB DDR3 ECC Registered memory modules do not exist so 32GBs will in fact be the max for your R510 server. The memory channels are a bit strange with the R510. Most servers have 2 or 3 DIMMs per channel. With the Dell R510, the memory channels are 1, 1, 2. Meaning 1 DIMM in first channel. 1 DIMM in second channel. And 2 DIMMs in 3rd channel. A very strange architecture. The channels start with whites so the tabs are white white white black.
