This video is about long-term root burn in my dry windowsill setup. My partner and I have created an App for the iPhone called „Orchid Collection“. Link to the App in the App Store: https://appsto.re/de/-Th5eb.i In my understanding root burn is primarily caused by fertilizer that dries and crystalises faster on the surface of exposed roots than the orchid is able to absorb the minerals. I think this ‚time factor’ plays an extremely important role, because it's a limiting factor: While the fertilized water dries the fertilizer concentration/TDS in the water that is left on the root rises and rises and the root burn begins. Once all water has evaporated there are only crystalised fertilizer minerals left that continue to burn the roots. Moist roots inside a pot have far more time to absorb all minerals, because the fertilizer stays dissolved longer. There are a few things that we can do to buy the orchids some time, though (begins at 4:30). I don't want to interfere with the Rainmix discussion, since I've never used it myself. Although I think the time factor plays an important role, it doesn't explain that problems seem to occur with one formula and not with another. But I got more aware of my root burn through watching the videos. I’m not a chemnist, so everything I say in this video is just my unprofessional hobbyist understanding of the topic. :) Enjoy!
