Portuguese is a Stress-Timed Language

Improve your comprehension and pronunciation of European Portuguese with these demonstration videos. At first, read slowly and properly enunciated and then at native speed, demonstrating possible and common elisions and also common and casual East Algarvian pronunciation. This video is part of a series of videos where I read sentences in Portuguese. Although these videos are organized in grammatical categories and learning levels, they are meant as pronunciation demonstration videos and not grammar lessons. For a grammar lesson on the present tense in Portuguese, please click here: https://thesoundsofportuguese.com/pre... This Present tense is part of the indicative mood (Indicativo). COLOURED LETTERS REPRESENT LIAISONS AND ELISIONS The red letters represent elisions which are vowels: 1 - that are pronounced very quickly and subtly or not at all ("estar" is a good example of this) 2 – with very reduced duration making it appear that they are not being pronounced at all. (The pronunciation of the preposition “de” and the “ue” in words like “queria” are good examples of this) And green and purple represent the liaisons, which are vowels or letters that: 1 – merge words together (green); 2 - change their original sound due to the merge (purple); These elisions and liaisons happen in the spoken form only and can vary greatly depending on formality, speed of speech, and also on regional accent. Don't feel like you need to learn how to do all these elisions and liaisons from the start as they come with time and experience with speaking Portuguese. In general, native speakers don't really notice they even speak like this! I like to point them out because I feel they are so important for learners to be aware of to improve comprehension. It's what ALL my students struggle with – ESPECIALLY in the ALGARVE ;) OTHER VIDEOS Absolute Beginners    • Start here!   Videos in Portuguese    • Portuguese with English Subtitles for...   Grammar    • European Portuguese Grammar   Pronunciation Rules and Guides    • European Portuguese Pronunciation   #disappearingvowelsinportuguese #europeanportuguese #easyportuguesepractice #euroepanportugueseelisions #portuguesespeaking 0:00 intro 0:16 Elisions and Liaisons 1:10 Examples
