Epitheliorhrexis, Mitomycin C and DMEK for Salzmann's Nodular Degeneration and Bullous Keratopathy
PBK is a well known cause of chronic corneal inflammation and can cause Salzmann's nodules to form. This is an unusual case where PBK was present in a cornea with relatively normal pre-operative stromal thickness. Post-operative AS-OCT demonstrated that 3 weeks after DMEK surgery, the cornea had deturgesced significantly into what would be considered an abnormally thin range. Confocal microscopy was a key element in making the decision to go to surgery in this case as it reaffirmed the diagnosis demonstrating an ECD of only 460 cells/mm2.
