In this video Jeff Peterson performs his arrangement of José Ferrer's Andantino for baritone ukulele, and then offers a lesson how you can learn this beautiful music on your uke! José Ferrer was an accomplished Spanish guitarist, composer, and educator who moved between Barcelona and Paris in the 1880s through the early 1900s. He taught at the Comédie Française in Paris and the Conservatori Superior de Música del Liceu in Barcelona. In the Andantino we explore 6/8 time which has six eighth notes per measure divided into two groups of three. Count 1 2 3 4 5 6 with emphasis on 1 and 4. There is a 2 beat anacrusis with beats 5 and 6. It is common to barre an Am chord in 5th position but we avoid this to allow the open E string to ring out over the chords at the 5th fret. The first finger moves as a guide finger connecting the 5th fret note A on the first string to the F on the 1st fret. Watch out for the ornamental notes that appear first in measure 4. Play the 1st fret, hammer on to the 3rd fret, then pull off back to the 1st fret in quick succession. The next ornament in this measure is on beat 5 with a quick pull off from the 3rd to 1st fret. This really spices up the music! Another interesting technique is the use of artificial harmonics in measure 16. Leave the two notes on the 2nd fret of the low strings down then use the right hand index finger to touch the 4th string directly above the 14th fret wire. The thumb then plucks the note to sound the harmonic. If you get a “thud” when you first attempt this don’t be discouraged. It takes a bit of trial and error but is a valuable technique to master.
