I'll say this up front - this was a fascinating area to research and explore! For Installment 7 we return to the YV right-of-way at Bagby, 48 miles from Merced and once the 5th station along the route. Bagby was making history long before the YV put down tracks through the canyon in 1907, its origins beginning around 1859 when John C. Freemont established two mines and a dam to power his new stamp mill. Using several photos gathered from Jack Burgess' book, "Trains to Yosemite", we were able to ascertain a fairly good lay-out of the town and locate the few ruins remaining from when the small community was functioning, and prior to it being razed in 1966 with the construction of the new Lake McClure dam. After 50+ years of being at the seasonal head-waters of the new lake, most of the townsite and surrounding areas are covered in a thick layer of sediment, at times making it difficult to locate any remains of foundations and bridge structures. But with a little diligence we foud enough to piece things together. The same is true of the Merced River Canyon downstream from Bagby, which we explored by air, looking for any signs of the old YV roadbed and mining operations. We didn't find much, but enough traces to show evidence of former activities, and certainly enough to share with you. Again, fascinating stuff! And yes, this is another very long video, however, I didn't want to cut out so much fascinating material of this once historically significant community in California's gold country just to satisfy self imposed time-lines. It's worth the view, however long, I promise. So as always, thank you for coming along as we continue exploring and retracing the very unique Yosemite Valley Railroad. It's been a fascinating and time-consuming undertaking, but all along the way a very rewarding experience. #abandonedrailway #steamengines #yosemite #yosemitevalley
