Hello everyone! This is Dr. S M Sredevi. Today let us talk about a condition which affects 4 to 5 percentage of pregnant women which is nothing but decreased amniotic fluid around the fetus ( Oligohydramnios). 💧What is amniotic fluid? Where is it produced from? Amniotic fluid is the water which is present around the baby in the uterus. It is produced from the maternal plasma as well as from the urine produced from the fetal kidneys after 17 weeks of gestation. Functions of Amniotic fluid: 💧 Amniotic fluid protects the baby from infection. 💧It forms a cushion around the baby and protects the baby from external trauma. 💧It protects against cord compression 💧Helps the baby to move and helps in the development of musculoskeletal system. 💧Helps in the development of respiratory and digestive system. 💧Regulates body temperature of the baby. How common is Oligohydramnios( decreased amniotic fluid)? 4 percent of pregnant women have this problem. If the pregnancy extends beyond 40 weeks then almost 12 percent of antenatal women suffer from Oligohydramnios. 💧Normal levels of Amniotic fluid is 10- 15 cm. 💧If the AFI is less than 5, or if the Maximal vertical pocket is less than 2 then it is called as Oligohydramnios. Causes of Oligohydramnios: 💧 Problems in the fetal kidneys/ urinary tract 💧 Placental problem 💧 Preeclampsia in pregnancy 💧 Diabetes complicating pregnancy 💧 Dehydration in mother 💧 Premature rupture of membranes 💧Twin twin transfusion syndrome Problems associated with Oligohydramnios: 1. Cord compression 2. Low birth weight baby 3.Immature Lungs 4.Increased risk of ceasarean 5.Premature birth 6. Risk of intrauterine infection. Diagnosis of Oligohydramnios: Scan can be used to diagnose low liquor. If your baby is premature and there is reduced liquor how should the pregnancy be monitored? 1.Serial USG to look for growth, and baby movements called as Biophysical profile. 2. Fetal Doppler to look for blood flow to the baby 3. NST( Non stress test) to look for baby' s fetal heart rate and uterine activity. Whenever there is a problem in fetal growth, NST , or Doppler then the baby has to be delivered . How can you prevent Oligohydramnios? 1. Optimization of pre- pregnancy weight. 2.Hydration and proper rest and balanced diet during pregnancy. 3. Blood pressure and Diabetes should be controlled before pregnancy. 4. Proper antenatal check ups This can prevent Oligohydramnios to some extent. Hope this video was useful. Meet you in an another interesting video next week. Thank you and Best wishes for your Healthy pregnancy. 😊😊 Dr S M Sredevi DGO,DNB,DRM( Germany) S V Medical Center 6/133 -1/1 Pollachi main road Solavampalayam kinathukadavu Coimbatore Phone: 9566704045
