An Instrument and an artifact: The intriguing story of a unique set of Uilleann Pipes that date back nearly 200 years. Made around 192 years ago by a man named Timothy Kenna. Disappeared for years and turned up in Church Street, Dublin in 1922 for £5 by Patrick (Peino) O'Donnell and passed down through the family and through Felix & Johnny Doran who used to come down in the 1930’s in Wexford where Mr. O’Donnell lived and swapped one of their sets with this set of pipes because of how fond of it they were for three months at a time. The Dorans would travel all around the place with these pipes in that time. Patrick O’ Donnell would then pass the pipes onto his nephew Johnny Burke who was a pipe maker. After Johnny Burke died, they were moved to another owner. Since then Pádraic Keane received them and has had them restored. The pipes themselves have gone through many battles and have received a few beatings along the way. At one stage a concrete block fell in a garage and landed on the set of pipes. The pipes themselves still have managed to survive and can be played. A lot of the parts from the set have be replaced or repaired numerous amounts of times from different pipe makers. Pádraic Keane a 26 year old who’s from a family of pure Traditional musicians. He’s been playing the music since he was 6 years old. He plays the Uilleann pipes, whistle and guitar. He received TG4’s ‘Young Musician of The Year Award’ in 2011 and was one of the youngest musician to ever get an award. He has toured all over the world entertaining people and is regarded as one of the best young pipers in the Irish music scene and is constantly busy with teaching and performing. He has played solo pieces with the RTE concert Orchestra and Irish chamber orchestra and has played for Michael D. Higgin’s. Pádraic is interviewed in his family home in Oranmore Maree, Co. Galway. He has all the details about the uilleann pipes and gives a full description of how it came to be in his hands today almost 200 years later. Filmed in 2018 as my final documentary project in college.
