The Old Glory Molly Dancers perform their reimagining of the Cutty Wren tradition in Middleton on St Stephen's day (26th December) 2025. This ancient tradition historically saw the hunting of the wren, the king of the birds, which was then paraded around the town while the 'wren boys' requested money from residents. Practices varied geographically, in some places the money was used to throw a party for bachelors and bachelorettes. Today, the dancers parade a wooden wren, and the money is donated to local charities. The dancers and musicians wear grey face paint in order to maintain anonymity. This harks back to older days when begging was illegal, and the disapproval of agricultural landowners could see work opportunities withheld. Dancers used to put soot on their faces, turn clothes inside out and adorn them with decorative ribbons and they would never smile - as notable teeth could quickly giveaway one's identity. I am currently working on a short documentary about Wrens in British and Irish folklore and tradition. I'm always keen to speak to anyone on this topic, so if you have any questions or information please leave a comment.
