On January 19, Kashmiri Pandits are marking the 31st anniversary of their migration from the Kashmir valley. Close to three lakh Kashmiri Pandits fled for their lives to Jammu and other places at the height of militancy in the Kashmir valley in early nineties. 90 year old Dina Nath Ganjoo is living with his 85 year old wife Chand Rani in the migrant township of Kashmiri Pandits at Jagti, 25 kilometres from Jammu. Their last wish is to return to Kashmir, the land where they were born and spend the best years of their lives. A decade back the family from Anantnag were among more than 4000 families that moved into the Jagti Township where they were allotted two room sets which were meant to make their lives a little more comfortable. But the colony of Kashmiri Pandits presents a picture of neglect. Some of the houses are dilapidated, the walls damp with water seeping from blocked pipes. Ganjoos’ say the family owned two houses in Kashmir but none exists now. They have resigned to his fate. For the next generation of Kashmiri pandits the idea of going back to Kashmir evokes mixed feelings of joy and fear. The issue of return of Kashmiri Pandits has always been marred with politics, but some among the community are making new beginnings. Sunil Pandita contested and won as an independent candidate in the Panchayat elections from a segment in his hometown of Kupwara in North Kashmir. He lives at Jagti but he says his heart is always in Kashmir. Even as security concerns dominate there are those who want to go to Kashmir if they are helped to make a new beginning there. Ashwani Mantoo is among the 45 Kashmiri Pandits who are protesting in Jammu for over 100 days demanding the fulfilment of the government promise of jobs in return of their going back to Kashmir. He had applied for a government job under the scheme 10 years back and is still waiting for an employment. More than three decades after they left their homes in Kashmir there is no roadmap for Pandits to return to Kashmir- Their long wait continues.
