Chhodub Ram is a poignant folk song from Rispa village, telling the story of a poor man trapped in debt to a local landlord. Longing to escape humiliation, he travels to the Thoryal forest of Tiuni (in present-day Uttarakhand) to work felling and loading logs for forest officials. Tiuni was once a key winter pastoral destination for shepherds from Kinnaur, a fact noted in Rahul Sankrityayan’s accounts of Kinnar Desh. Over time, many have sung this song with “Kashang forest” in place of Thoryal, blending local geography with memory, but the historical connection to Tiuni reflects older migration routes and interlinked livelihoods. In the song, tragedy strikes when, during a storm, a log falls on the protagonist, killing him. While the specific identities of the man and the landlord are not central, the song’s enduring power lies in how it speaks to histories of migration, labour, and the deep social inequalities that persist.
