Paul Uhlir and Cole Peterson, then seniors at the Bush School in Seattle in late 1986, made this video for a history class because they didn't want to write a paper. They were in a band, SGM, which was a precursor to what would ultimately become Sweet Water. They roped me into shooting video because I had access to a VHS camera (rare in those days). They also coerced me into playing the role of John Wright, the listless Seattle gomer in a YDC shirt up against a wall with a Deep Six poster. They made me “recount” some fictitious story about being at a show and then rattle off inane goals of the bourgeois YDC. The funniest part of this, and what made it such a great piece, was that we were shooting b-roll at a shuttered club, and sure enough there was Linda Brill from KING-5 doing a similar piece. As she interviewed Paul and Cole, she was cranking a cigarette off-camera. Cole was so funny because he kept trying to plug SGM into every phrase. Wisely, KING-5 didn’t use any of that. All-in-all, a great piece of Seattle history.
