Game: Diddy Kong Racing, 1997 System: Nintendo 64 Composer: David Wise Courses: Frosty Village and Walrus Cove "Frosty Village" sequencer: Gigasoft "Walrus Cove" sequencer: Paper_Luigi [as "Walrus Cove (arranged)"] MIDIs obtained from: VGMusic.com Gigasoft says nothing. Paper_Luigi says: "Not much of a remix, but it's got a bit of an enhanced quality over the original (such as an added bells part), and someone else thought it was a remix, so I'm calling it that. (I called it an Arrangement rather than Remix; I think it's more suitable - Dave.)" I decided to pair these two songs together because they're so similar. Frosty Village and Walrus Cove, in case you haven't already guessed, or you haven't played this game (shame!) are both winter-themed race courses. They both feature the sleigh bell(s) as a percussion instrument in them, as well as chimes. David Wise cleverly inserted musical references to two Christmas songs in "Walrus Cove", and that is why I think people who have played Diddy Kong Racing enjoy listening to it (and Frosty Village and Everfrost Peak) during the month of December. The two songs David Wise referenced in "Walrus Cove" are "Here Comes Santa Claus" and "Winter Wonderland". Here are the lyrics of "Here Comes Santa Claus". YouTube doesn't allow text formatting, so I can't bold or italic the part referenced in DKR: {begin lyrics} Here comes Santa Claus, here comes Santa Claus Right down Santa Claus Lane Vixen and Blitzen and all his reindeer Pullin' on the reins. here's the part David Wise references Bells are ringin', children singin' All is merry and bright Hang your stockings and say your prayers 'Cause Santa Claus comes tonight! {end lyrics} For certain reasons, Mr. Wise didn't copy the melody exactly. He didn't want the song to sound straight-up Christmas, but he merely wanted to make you think of Christmas-y and Wintery things as you were racing. He changed the melody (and chords) a bit to make it fit within his or the game's musical style. In the "Winter Wonderland" section, he references the second part of the song where it briefly changes keys; you know: {begin lyrics} In the meadow we can build a snowman. And pretend that he\ is Parson Brown/'s a Circus Clown \He'll say "Are you married?" We'll say "No man! /We'll have lots of fun with Mr. Snowman \"But you can do the job when you're in town!" /Until the other kiddies knock him down! {end lyrics} David Wise changes the melody even more here. Anyway, that's it for today! I'm sorry I didn't get this video up sooner, but my Internet wasn't working. Stay tuned, as I've already prepared two more MIDIjam videos, and one of them might be another as-of-yet-unknown (to you) song from Diddy Kong Racing. Any guesses as to what I've recorded? (Hint: it's not winter-themed.)
