Summer Seminar Series is back! Join Special Collections & Archives staff as we talk about what we know best, our collections. In this July 2021 talk, Curator of Books and Maps Eric Ensley, explores the act of book breaking. Early books have been broken for many reasons: profit, education, and even artistic endeavors. Some book breakers, like Otto Ege, have been maligned for their practices and their ethics called into doubt. Short of rehabilitating Ege and other breakers' images, this talks asks if it is possible or worthwhile to revisit their practices and our reactions to them while examining some of the products of breakings in the University of Iowa's collections. ------ Connect with UI Special Collections & Archives by...
