This video explains general characteristics of lanthanoids. Lanthanoids are metallic in nature and behave as reducing agents. They show magnetic behavior due to the presence of unpaired electrons in 5f sub shell. They form colored ions in solid state and as well as in solution and the color is due to unpaired electron present in f sub shell which undergoes ff transitions. They form complexes and their tendency to form complexes is less because of low nuclear charge and large ion size. Lanthanoids are reactive and react with non metals like oxygen, nitrogen, sulphur, carbon, to form corresponding compounds. Lanthanoids react with water and dilute acids to evolve hydrogen. They become passive with nitric acid. They are used in forming alloys , like mesh metal, which is a very important alloy used in formation of jet engine parts. Lanthanoid oxides are used in fire polishing of glass, colored glass of goggles. Cerium sulphate is used in volumetric analysis as an oxidising agent.
