City Ambients Vol. 1 is the first episode of a new audiovisual project focused on urban spaces and sound. I film city streets and urban aesthetics in black and white, and create a soundtrack specifically to exist with the moving image. The music was recorded live on hardware as a long, repetitive take using a Roland TR-8S and Moog DFAM. This piece runs at 140 BPM, with a crunchy, saturated pattern, and lasts just under 10 minutes. I’ve been making deep dubstep for many years, but I’ve always been drawn to minimal and repetitive structures, especially in techno — where very little changes, yet it holds your attention and keeps you locked in. For me, this kind of minimalistic approach almost feels like a meditation. All footage was filmed by me in Brighton, UK, and the entire video was edited by hand to work with the rhythm and pacing of the sound. This isn’t a traditional music video, but an audiovisual piece where the sound and image were made together. I spent a lot of time filming, recording, and editing everything here. I hope you enjoy watching and listening.
