I was needing a pirate rum barrel for our pirate ship dock for Halloween. I couldn't find any real wooden barrels where we live so my wife came up with this idea. As it turns out this is really better that real wooden whisky barrels. It's an easy build (no need for advanced prop making skills). It is quick (takes about 1 hour including the optional wooden top). It takes minimal basic tools. The total cost is around $25.00 and they are lightweight and come apart for storage after Halloween. All parts can be found at most hardware stores. I got mine at our local Lowe's Home Improvement store. While some prop making enthusiasts will point out it is not perfect the resulting barrel is actually a fairly realistic looking pirate rum barrel (or also can be used as a power keg) that looks great in our family haunt, at night, in the dark of the Haunted Forest. It doesn't have to be perfect. It's only a Halloween prop for cryin' out loud. I have actually made several of these and have used them for my rum drinking pirate skeleton drinking from the barrel, my drunk skeleton pirate swaying around on top of the barrel, my pop up skeleton pirate that is a pop up scare who pops up from inside the barrel and for other props and just decorations in the pirate ship and on the dock. You can also make a small barrel by just using a smaller planter. What ever size barrel you make the build is the same.
