It took me a bit longer to post this exciting piece because I had to work work with the symphonic score. I'm not a great score reader so it was a bit tricky deciphering which instrument was playing the melody & which was providing the accompaniment. This is a high energy piece. All of Haydn's music is high energy. It was given the nickname 'The Hen' or 'La Poule' because of the 2nd theme with its 'acciaccaturas' which resemble the 'clucking' of a hen as it scratches around for food. Haydn's genius is highly evident in the beautiful melodic & harmonic contrasts applied in the development of the two opening themes. The modal flexibility is brilliant in the development section where he introduces tension with dissonances & even combines major & minor modes simultaneously. Someone commented, "That's one nasty chicken!" I never got tired of this symphony, it was a really fun piece to play. I also experimented with Adobe's Multitrack features for the beautiful oboe's upper repeated notes in the 'clucking' theme. I normally don't like to do multitrack recordings but this piece is just not the same without that part.
