With a mixture of heavy hearts and joy, today, we say goodbye to the old farmhouse as we conduct a controlled burn. A controlled burn was not the way we wanted this to end, however, the damage in and under the home exceeded a repair cost well over what we were willing to spend. If we could have saved the house, we would have. However, the house was deemed, by professionals, uninhabitable for health and safety reasons. It is time to clean up the yard and start making improvements on the overall look and feel of the family homestead. The much needed property maintenance will make a huge transformation for the overall look of the farmstead as well. With heavy hearts, we still found a sense of joy knowing that this journey was coming to an end. We tried, endlessly, to find people who would help take the structure down for free materials. Some people did take materials, only to burn them later once they took them home. The wood they tried to use in their own house started to emit the same odor we endured during the clean-out process. The unpleasant smells forced those who took materials home to rip them back out of their construction projects and burn it. Knowing that we would no longer have suffer through this mess was what brought us joy on this day. Knowing that we could expand our homestead, our gardens, make new memories, and still utilize the land my great, great grandpa purchased in the 1800s is what gave us hope.
