Therefore, it goes without saying that this scale must be highly developed. Since pentatonic is the number one choice for lead guitar I’ve developed a ‘tried and true’ pentatonic practice method that I know works because I’ve been teaching it to my own students for many years. My method covers how to most effectively use the Pentatonic scale for both knowing the neck and for playing guitar solos. What it does, is use a small number of strings and then plots the scale across a large number of frets. The practice method in this lesson consists of a 3-section block that will help with mastering the use of pentatonic along every string. It’s a highly effective way to study the pentatonic because it builds both an excellent connection to the notes and great licks to solo with. If you can put aside roughly 5 min. each day to study what I have for you in this lesson, it will make a big difference to how you play and use Pentatonic scale. In most cases we learn the Pentatonic “in position” (as a box pattern). While that can offer some help with using it on the guitar, it generally isn’t how most professional players use it in their solos. What I’ve done is taken ideas from transcriptions I’ve done of hundreds of songs over my career as a guitar instructor and I’ve organized an approach to apply the scale.
