1976 documentary | English subtitles | Spanish dialogue The Belgian–German coproduction "Narciso Yepes: Portret van een gitarist" / "Portrait d'un guitariste" was initially uploaded to YouTube, here ( • Narciso Yepes Portrait d'un guitariste ), with French overdubbing, and later, here ( • Narciso Yepes - "Portrait d' un Guita... ), with Swedish subtitles and the original Spanish narration. I've taken the liberty of combining the less degraded audio of the former with the less degraded video of the latter as the basis of a new version, which I've denoised and otherwise audio-visually restored (as much as such degraded footage permitted) and to which I've added English subtitles. In addition, I've made this version, which reincorporates the original Spanish narration, restored (though, at times, not very successfully), from the more heavily degraded version of the audio track. The more 'straightforwardly' restored version with the French overdubbing can be found here: • 𝘕𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘪𝘴𝘰 𝘠𝘦𝘱𝘦𝘴 • 𝙋𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙞𝙩 𝙙'𝙪𝙣 𝙜𝙪𝙞𝙩𝙖𝙧𝙞... It is worth viewing, if only for the fact that it includes dialogue, somehow absent from the Spanish version, concerning Narciso's views on music education and the academy, which may be found here: • 𝘕𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘪𝘴𝘰 𝘠𝘦𝘱𝘦𝘴 • 𝙋𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙞𝙩 𝙙'𝙪𝙣 𝙜𝙪𝙞𝙩𝙖𝙧𝙞... The restoration was quite time-consuming and far from simple. First, such restoration is an art unto itself that, if left entirely to so-called artificial intelligence, could easily be done in a way that is heavily denoised but cartoonishly unnatural and riddled with newly introduced noise artifacts (e.g., lines that look like extra frets between the actual frets of the guitar or robotic, sibilant noises). A human eye and ear have to navigate between the pros and cons of reducing audio/visual noises, on the one hand, and the inevitably concomitant reduction or alteration of desirable qualities, on the other. Second, the two sources that had to be combined were actually incompatible since they had different frame rates, different durations, and they differed in pitch by over half a semitone. Everything had to be carefully adjusted to fit. Last but not least tedious of all, the Swedish subs had to be masked out, one by one; the Spanish dialogue had to be transcribed and translated; and, finally, the English subs had to be added, one by one. No doubt, one could make better restorations with access to less degraded sources, but at least now this historical document is accessible for those of us who are not fluent in Spanish or French, and without all the frying of fish in the background.
