You can get more information on me at Hanania.com On today’s podcast show we will discuss: SEG 1: The Two Faces of Illinois Gov JB Pritzker, champion of anti-Trump justice, failure as a governor. Illinois is the 48th Worst State, and Pritzker just initiated new taxes in the state. LIST OF NEW TAXES In July 2025, Illinois enacted a budget that included tax increases on gas, tobacco and nicotine products, telecommunication services, and sports betting. The state is also implementing a temporary tax amnesty program in late 2025 and is eliminating the state-level 1% grocery tax in January 2026. New taxes effective July 1, 2025 • Gasoline: The annual motor fuel tax increased to 48.3 cents per gallon, with the diesel tax rising to 55.8 cents per gallon. This is part of an automatic annual increase tied to inflation. • Tobacco and nicotine products: The tax rate on tobacco and nicotine products, including vapes, pouches, and cigars, increased from 36% to 45% of the wholesale price. The tax on cigarettes also increased by $1 per pack. • Telecommunication services: The state tax on telecommunication services increased from 7% to 8.65%. The revenue from this increase is designated to fund the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. • Sports betting: A new per-wager tax was introduced for online sports betting operators. The tax is 25 cents for the first 20 million wagers and increases to 50 cents for bets beyond that threshold. In response, some large betting companies have begun charging a 50-cent fee per wager to Illinois customers. • Short-term rentals: Hosting platforms like Airbnb and Vrbo are now required to collect the state's 6% hotel operators' occupation tax on short-term rentals. • Business taxes: A number of changes affecting businesses went into effect, including a shift to the "Finnigan rule" for combined reporting, the elimination of some addback exceptions, and changes to sales tax application on leased property. New taxes effective January 1, 2026 • Grocery tax elimination: The state's 1% sales tax on groceries is set to be eliminated. Many Illinois municipalities have their own grocery tax, which will not be affected by this change. • Economic nexus threshold: For remote retailers, the 200-transaction threshold for economic sales tax nexus will be removed. Starting in 2026, sales tax nexus will be determined solely by meeting or exceeding $100,000 in gross receipts within a 12-month period.
